On Thursday, May 16, 2025, Safe Way Right Way (SWRW), with support from TotalEnergies, hosted a one-day VIA refresher training workshop at Golf Course Hotel in Kampala. The training brought together schoolteachers from across Kampala city to strengthen their capacity in delivering road safety education to school-going children.
The VIA program, which targets young people aged 10 to 18 years, is a flagship road safety initiative implemented by SWRW in Kampala and five Tilenga project districts. Through a train-the-trainer model, the program has trained 269 teachers from 138 schools, equipping them with tools to promote safer mobility among students.
The Kampala refresher workshop led by Suzan, the Project Coordinator, and Monica, the Project Officer aimed to build upon three years of ongoing training by addressing gaps identified through a needs assessment conducted with the teachers. The session created a vibrant space for educators to reflect on their experiences, share challenges and best practices, and receive updates aligned with the latest road safety developments.
“This workshop is a timely reminder that road safety starts with awareness,” said Suzan. “Teachers are at the forefront of shaping how our young people interact with roads, and through VIA, they are becoming key advocates for change.”
Throughout the day, participants engaged in interactive presentations, open discussions, and brainstorming sessions. A core part of the agenda focused on reinforcing knowledge about the principles of safe mobility, as well as improving reporting skills to better align with donor expectations.
The session also gave educators a valuable opportunity to connect and learn from one another. Many shared inspiring stories of how VIA has already begun to shift road safety behaviours in their schools. Monica emphasized the importance of continued support and collaboration. “Your input helps us tailor the program to be even more impactful. We are here to listen, support, and grow with you,” she said.
By the end of the workshop, the teachers expressed renewed enthusiasm to implement what they had learned. With ongoing commitment from SWRW and TotalEnergies, the VIA program continues to pave the way for safer journeys for thousands of young Ugandans.
