VIA Road Safety Education:
Safe Way Right Way in partnership with the Total Energies Foundation, Michelin foundation and Global Road Safety Partnerships have joined forces to launch VIA, a comprehensive education program in road safety and mobility targeting children from 10 to 18 years of age.
VIA is a global road safety education program that provides innovative learning materials designed to deliver school based road safety education to young people which guarantees more learning success than traditional methods. The program was adopted in Uganda on the backdrop of escalating reported cases of road crashes in the country specifically targeting Kampala metropolitan area and the Albertine region.
The Kampala Metropolitan Area has the highest reported cases of road traffic injuries and death in the country while the Albertine region has recorded the second highest number of fatalities, after the Kampala Metropolitan area with 299 deaths, that is 25 lives lost per month. The Albertine region also recorded the 5th highest number of road crashes with 685 crashes in 2021, that is 57 road crashes per month or at least two people involved in road crashes per day.
The frequency of road crashes within the region may further increase due to the development and upgrading of current road infrastructure and additional traffic due to oil activities that the communities are not acclimatized to.
SWRW aims to respond directly to this challenge and mitigate further road carnage by empowering the teachers and school going children in the Albertine region and the Kampala metropolitan area on road safety through capacity building for selected teachers on the delivery of the VIA road safety program and direct sensitization of the students.
The teachers to be trained as Trainers of Trainees will be identified and carefully selected in partnership with the office of the District Education Officer and the Headteachers of the selected schools. Thereafter, they will work closely with the Safe Way Right Way team to establish road safety clubs and deliver the VIA road safety program within their respective schools.
